Overview
Verifone eCommerce is a Finnish online payment service provider, backed by Verifone’s long experience in payment solutions. Verifone eCommerce is designed to meet the needs of businesses of all sizes, enabling the management of both e-commerce and store payment traffic within a single system. Verifone’s solution offers a wide range of payment methods, such as bank buttons, credit and debit cards, and mobile payment methods for the WooCommerce online store. Verifone’s service, which emphasizes operational reliability, is utilized in Finland by major players like Alko and Verkkokauppa.com.
Challenge
The Verifone eCommerce payment method plugin had been available for years as a zip package on Verifone’s website. Now, the goal was to get it into the official WordPress.org plugin directory to increase visibility, build trust, and enable wider distribution.
The challenge was that the plugin development model used by the original implementer was reactive, and for example, during WooCommerce version updates, the plugin often ceased to function. Problems were only noticed in production when customers complained about them.
Solution
Evermade approached the project with operational reliability as the priority: first, we built automated tests that test the plugin daily against the stable version of WooCommerce as well as the beta version. This allows for the identification of compatibility issues caused by changes to the plugin and/or WooCommerce.
Next, we tackled numerous long-standing bug and compatibility fixes, including those for other WooCommerce extensions (e.g. gift cards). Along the way, we also added support to Apple Pay, tidied up and clarified the administration view, created new tests for WordPress’s own “Site Health” screen, and performed technical debt reduction under the hood that had accumulated over the years.
Verifone also asked for our assistance in redesigning the payment pages themselves, which simultaneously needed to introduce Verifone’s new look to the user interface, consider usability improvements related to payment, and ensure that the implementation was compatible with Verifone’s own systems.

Results
Distributing the plugin through the WordPress plugin directory is easier and more reliable for all parties: updates are available to everyone simultaneously, and the plugin is installed directly from the directory and/or merchants’ WordPress dashboards, just like other plugins. The process for inclusion in the official WordPress plugin directory involved adhering to high quality standards, investing in security, and passing a rigorous evaluation. The work was streamlined, for example, by Evermade’s developers’ extensive experience with the WordPress community and understanding of how the WordPress plugin team operates.
Furthermore, a thorough security audit has been conducted on the plugin by a leading provider of open-source vulnerability analytics. Evermade is responsible for the maintenance and continued development of the plugin in close cooperation with Verifone.
